Sending Lesson Notes to Students
Lesson notes are how you send practice assignments, feedback, and repertoire reminders to a student. You write them in the classroom notes panel (or from your Notes page), and once you send them the student can review them from their own account. This article covers writing lesson notes, how they differ from your private student notes, exactly how to send them, and where the student finds them afterward.
Lesson Notes vs. Student Notes
The notes panel has two tabs, and they serve very different purposes:
- Lesson — Lesson notes tied to the current lesson. These are the notes you send to the student. When you are on this tab you are writing what the student will eventually see.
- Student — Your private notes about the student (the student sees this tab labelled My notes and it holds their own personal notes instead). The notes you keep here are visible only to you and are never sent — use them for reminders about a student's goals, preferences, or things to revisit.
For a fuller comparison, see Lesson Notes vs. Student Notes.
Writing Lesson Notes
Inside the classroom, open the notes panel and make sure you are on the Lesson tab. To add a note:
- Click Create note (it reads Add note once at least one note exists) to open the create-note form.
- Enter a note title and type the note itself.
- Optionally pick a category (such as Technique, Music theory, Assignments, Scales and Exercises, or Repertoire). If you choose Repertoire, you can also select a piece so the note is grouped under that piece.
- Click Submit to save the note. There is no auto-save — a note is only stored once you submit it.
You can add as many notes as you like. In the Lesson tab your notes are grouped by category, and Repertoire notes are grouped further by piece name, so the panel stays organised as it fills up. You can edit or delete any note until it has been finalized. For step-by-step guides, see Create Lesson Notes and Edit Lesson Notes.
Sending Lesson Notes to the Student
Notes stay private to you until you send them. Sending is what makes them visible to the student.
From the Classroom
- On the Lesson tab, review or finish writing your notes (you need at least one note).
- Click Send lesson notes. This button becomes available 5 minutes before the lesson end time.
- Confirm in the Send lesson notes dialog by clicking Send.
From the Notes Page
You can also send from your Lesson Notes page outside the classroom. Open the lesson, then click Send (shown as Send & finalize once the lesson has started).
Timing changes what sending does:
- Before the lesson starts: sending shares a preliminary version. The notes stay editable and you can re-send them as many times as you like — the student always sees your latest version.
- After the lesson has started: sending finalizes and locks the notes. Finalized notes can no longer be edited, added to, or deleted.
Once finalized, the lesson moves from your Unsent section to your Sent section. For more on these states, see Unsent Notes vs. Sent Notes, and see Send Lesson Notes for the full sending guide. You can revisit delivered notes any time with View Sent Lesson Notes.
What the Student Receives
When you send lesson notes, the student is notified based on their notification preferences:
- In-app and push notification: titled "New Notes from [your name]" with the message "New Lesson Notes for [course title]!"
- Email: a "New lesson notes received" email with a View notes button that opens the lesson.
The student can turn either of these off in their own notification settings, so a student may not always receive a message even though the notes are delivered.
Where the Student Finds the Notes
After you send, the student can open the notes from their account:
- They go to their Lessons page and click the lesson.
- They click the Notes icon on the lesson detail panel.
- On the Lesson tab they see the notes you sent — read-only note cards showing each title, text, and date, grouped by category and piece just as you organised them. Their own private notes live on the My notes tab.
The student only ever sees notes you have actually sent — anything still unsent stays private to you. Lesson notes are stored indefinitely, so the student can revisit them any time. For the student's perspective, see Accessing Lesson Notes as a Student and Viewing Lesson Notes Sent by Your Teacher.
