Controlling Who Can Message You
Tissimo Messaging keeps you connected with the students you teach. As a teacher, you also have a single setting that controls whether people who have never taken a lesson with you can reach out before booking. This article explains who can message you, how to turn prospective-student messaging on or off, how to manage message notifications, and what to do about an inappropriate message. For a broader overview, see messages overview.
Who can message you
There are two groups of people, and they are treated differently:
- Students you teach — anyone who has booked a lesson with you (a trial or any paid lesson, past or upcoming) can always message you. This can never be switched off, so you never lose contact with an active student.
- Prospective students — students who have never had a lesson with you. Whether they can send you a first message is controlled by a single setting called Prospective student messaging. When it is on, they can message you before booking; when it is off, they cannot start a new conversation with you.
This setting is turned on by default, so new teachers are open to questions from prospective students. To learn how the first message in a new conversation works, see start of conversation.
Changing your Prospective student messaging setting
- Go to teaching policies in your settings (Settings > Teaching policies).
- Find the Prospective student messaging section, labelled “Allow students to message you before booking their first lesson.”
- Click the toggle to turn it on or off.
- Click Save to apply your change.
When the setting is off, prospective students cannot open a new conversation with you. On your teacher profile the message button is hidden, and on your course pages it appears greyed out with the note “This teacher does not accept messages before trial.” Students you already teach are unaffected and can keep messaging you as normal.
Managing message notifications
Turning prospective-student messaging on or off is separate from how you are notified about messages. To control alerts for incoming messages:
- Go to notifications in your settings (Settings > Notifications).
- Switch between the Push notifications and Email notifications tabs.
- Toggle New Messages on or off for each channel, then save your changes.
Push and email are controlled independently, so you can keep one on and turn the other off. For the full list of notification categories, see managing notifications.
Handling an inappropriate message
Tissimo does not have an in-app block or report button. The three-dot menu on a message lets you Download, Copy, or Delete it — deleting removes it from your side of the conversation only. If someone sends you messages that are abusive, spammy, or otherwise break Tissimo’s guidelines, the right step is to contact support so our team can review the account and take action.
Tissimo also protects you automatically: when a message contains an email address or phone number, the platform flags it for review behind the scenes, without any action from you. Sharing contact details to take lessons off-platform is against Tissimo’s terms, so keep your conversations inside Tissimo Messaging.
